From early age keenly interested in nature, music, literature. At the Prague Academic secondary school professor J.Jeništa directed his attention toward mathematics, physics and astronomy.
After first year of study of natural science at Prague Charles University, out of his admiration of the discoveries of British scientists, he went to study chemistry and physics at the London University College under professors William Ramsay and Frederick G.Donnan.
The outbreak of the World War I. caught him on holidays at home. He was drafted to the Austro-Hungarian army where he served in military dispensaries; that gave him the chance to stay in contact with chemistry.
